The environment will be the flagship store, located within an existing unit in the Highcross Shopping Centre, Leicester. My solution promotes high quality eco-products; confident and stylish, not merely environmentally sympathetic. The store specialises in design-led eco-fashion, as well as ethical homeware, stationery and organic skincare made using natural ingredients. In store, at the re:fresh bar, customers can have a skin consultation and (with guidance and a cup of lemon and honey tea) blend ingredients to make personalised organic cosmetics. People know exactly what’s in the skincare products they create, and develop a connection with the brand. My solution is based upon removing preconceptions by giving young teenagers the opportunity to experience being 80 years old. On board, young people wear ‘ageing suits’, which simulate some of the physiological symptoms of ageing such as hearing loss, declining vision, stiff joints, weaker muscles and reduced dexterity, whilst completing role-playing activities. To really make a difference in society, this experience needed to reach large numbers of teenagers. This led to the idea of self-contained mobile environment that can travel to schools throughout the country using the same equipment and staff, maximizing resources. I read research by psychologist Sara Konrath, who found that teenagers today are 40% less empathetic than 30 years ago. The report mentioned that the ability to empathize is like a muscle, which can grow, backing up the idea that this hands-on experience for young people, can ‘teach’ empathy and understanding. At university, we had the opportunity to try a similar ageing suit. I found this to be a profound, lasting experience. Being less able to see or hear my surroundings (normally taken for granted) made me feel completely isolated and vulnerable. Subsequently, I’m much more aware of older people. If I see someone struggling in the supermarket I’ll help them; before I probably wouldn’t have realised they were in difficulty. I believe every young person should share this experience. This was selected as the winning reception area design, and the prize was a two week work placement at Id*a, Leicester. The concept was to remove the barrier (i.e. reception desk) between the company and visitors, by having a roaming receptionist who greets visitors. The receptionist carries an iPad system with a hands-free headset, enabling them to continue to perform regular duties like responding to emails, printing documents and taking phone calls. Continue the brand development through the design of a small scale concession. As part of the concession, there is an area where (under supervision from trained staff), children can decorate their own cakes and create personalised gifts - complimenting the ‘homemade’ feel of the products.
